How did you get an alto clarinet with a curved head joint like a bass clarinet?
@Fumbles9001 In large bands, however, there is generally only one alto clarinet being used among a large section of Bb Sopranos. This would be similar to a saxophone section of 12 altos with one tenor (Lord help us all!). In this case, the tenor’s color would be lost in contrast to a balanced section of 2 Altos, 1 Tenor, and 1 Bari. An ideally balanced section of 12-16 clarinet players would be 1 Eb Sopanino, 2 1st, 2-3 2nd, 2-4 3rd, 2 Altos, 2 Bass, 1 Eb contra alto, and 1 Bb Contra Bass.
@Fumbles9001 Well, its like the article said. The clarinet family is similar in concept to the saxophone family consisting of the Bb Soprano, Eb Alto, Bb Tenor, Eb Bari, and Bb Bass. In each case, the ranges easily overlap allowing one to skip an instrument with no loss of notes (as you said). The real loss is color. However, some people don’t say they hear color difference with or without an Alto Clarinet. However, this is the product of balance if anything.
@WenchesOfRedemption You’re right, I understand that a good quality instrument when put into the hands of a good player probably sounds great. Nonetheless, I don’t really see a practical application when those parts can be covered by the soprano and bass. I see it being applied in clarinet choirs, but that’s about it.
@Fumbles9001 I am currently playing an alto clarinet for my clarinet choir, and I can get it to play pretty loud. Common knowledge tip: The only poor alto’s are ones that are kept in bad shape, one that is made of an inferior brand maker, or one being used by an unskilled player.
Even if I can’t get it to play loud, guess what? Loud isn’t important (unless you are in the Chicago philharmonics or a marching bad setting) and it doesn’t add to the grace and beauty that can come with an alto.
@WenchesOfRedemption I’m sure there are people out there who can make the shittiest instrument in the world sound good. I’m not saying that the alto clarinet is a shit instrument. I like playing it, it’s fun and sounds pretty good, it’s just that it’s hard to tune, it isn’t very loud, and with instruments with large ranges like the bass clarinet and soprano clarinet, there’s not really a need for an in-between instrument.
@Fumbles9001 Take a nice look at this video of an alto clarinet: watch?v=T_IA8K7xK8g
You are ignorant my friend.
wow that’s boobsaxy
@Fumbles9001 No I know im right because Ive seen it in situations where it is used. So I already know I’m right, I was trying to correct. You’ve already proven to me that you don’t like the instrument because you can’t play it. I mean, in my book, I won. You never come back to my points with your own arguments, because hey, you know I’m right. And you used stereotypes against Tennessee with to support your argument with the other guy. Like I said, I think I’ve already won. Move along now.
@7Jubal7 Now you have to use stereotypes to support your argument, and call me stupid. Really, if anything, you’ve just proven that you’re ignorant and don’t have the means to make a good argument without the use of insults. You lost, just face it. And you’re probably a child.
@7Jubal7 I never said I hate the instrument, nor did I say I can’t play it. I just think it’s kind of a shitty instrument. I’ve played it, and it’s nothing special. It’s not very loud, and it doesn’t sound very good.
@Fumbles9001 Oh, and you finally admitted that it CAN be used in clarinet choirs. I’m proud of you. Thats a step up from your usual “It’s always useless in every situation no matter what because I hate it and can’t play it” crap.
@Fumbles9001 You just proved my point. You dont like it because it is too hard. Volume is irrelevant, the bass clarinet is very soft but used quite often. And lets be honest here, no clarinet is loud. An instrument isnt defined as useless just because it is soft and hard to play. By your logic, the bass clarinet and bassoon are useless too. Anyone can play alto clarinet if they want to. Your opinion doesnt matter. But I’m done arguing. You can’t fix stupid. (Maybe its because you live in Texas.)
@7Jubal7 Actually, the alto clarinet is a glorified bassett horn in the key of e flat instead of f or g. Except the alto clarinet is very poorly designed and doesn’t play well. It is by-far the hardest of the clarinets to play, and frankly, there’s not a whole lot of a reason to play it. It isn’t loud, and it doesn’t sound that good unless a really great player is playing it. The only practical application for it is in solos or clarinet choirs. And yes, I do, because we have TMEA.
@Fumbles9001 And you must not be aware of the basset horn. Which is essentially a glorified alto clarinet and is called for a lot. And when the player doesn’t have a basset horn, an alto clarinet is used. The setup is no different from any other clarinet, it plays the same range. So saying it is useless is like calling bass clarinet or any other useless. It’s just a different sound. And you make fun of Tennessee, but you live in TEXAS?
@Fumbles9001 I doubt highly you’ve had any master classes. The alto clarinet is a chromatic instrument with a very large range. Rarely called for, but saying it can never be used is bullshit. So if a band has no alto saxes alto clarinet can’t be used? What I think is wrong is you cant play the instrument well and thats why you hate it. It can (and HAS been) used if needed. Anyone can play one if they want to, they don’t need a middle school level player like you to approve it for them.
@7Jubal7 Okay, well every master class teacher, every band director I have ever had, the master students I’ve had classes with and my private lesson teacher who has a doctorate in Clarinet performance from the University of Texas- all who say the alto clarinet is a useless piece of shit- must not know anything about music or music placement. You’re right, clearly.
@Fumbles9001 You’re a complete dumbass. And you don’t know shit about music or music placement. No instrument is useless. And Tennesseans know music a shitton better than wherever your from. Because apparently where you’re from, you get awards for conducting. If you give a four year old a baton and a beat he can conduct. Go back to playing your high school repertoire.
hehe you like like comic book guy from the simpsons :3
@JoeGancher Not sure I remember the brand but they are alto sax reeds. Probably 3 or 3.5.
They could be old Gaurdella’s.
@JoeGancher Golden Gate Park somewhere around the middle south area.
Very interesting interpretation!!! I’ve heard the alto clarinet very little, let alone playing jazz!!!!! I liked the old timey vibrato you coaxed out of the instrument, it reminded me somewhat of Coleman Hawkins playing tenor. Top drawer!!!
